A winch lets you recover your own vehicle when you're bogged, stuck on a steep climb or caught in a washout, without relying on another vehicle being in the right place. For touring in remote areas, it's one of the most valuable pieces of gear you can fit.

How to choose a winch

  • Line pull: compare the rated pull with your vehicle's loaded weight, with a good margin.
  • Rope: synthetic rope is lighter and easier to handle, while steel cable is tough against abrasion.
  • Controls: check whether the winch has a wired controller, wireless remote or both.
  • Mounting: make sure it suits your bar or winch cradle.

Mounting and accessories

Most winches are fitted inside a winch-compatible bull bar. Carry recovery gear such as soft shackles, a snatch block and a tree trunk protector, and always use rated recovery points.

What size winch do I need?
Choose a winch with a rated line pull well above your vehicle's loaded weight, to allow for mud, sand and inclines.
Synthetic rope or steel cable?
Synthetic rope is lighter and easier to handle, while steel cable resists abrasion. Check the product page for the rope type supplied.
Will a winch fit my bull bar?
Most bull bars have a winch-compatible option. Check your bar's specifications and the winch's mounting details.
