Chassis Shield™: The Original 4WD Underbody Rust Protection
Chassis Shield™ is the transparent underbody sealant that changed 4WD care forever. Spray it onto your chassis, suspension, tow bar, diffs, bullbar and arches, let it bond, and salt, sand and mud rinse straight off with plain water when you get home. No scrubbing, no sticky residue and no rust quietly starting in your rails. It is extremely hydrophobic and sand-phobic, 100% transparent, and turns matte factory chassis paint into a clean high gloss.
Born on the job in 2021, Chassis Shield™ was developed by Justin, founder of 4WDetail, while detailing 4WDs full time with pre-trip protection as part of the service, so every blend was designed and proven on real customer rigs first. No copy cat can say that. It is made, bottled, engineered and tested in QLD, Australia, rated 4.8 out of 5 by thousands of verified Aussie 4WDers, with over 350,000 litres of 4WDetail product sold to more than 70,000 customers.
One scratch is all rust needs
Rock rash and stone chips crack open your chassis paint on every trip, and broken chipped paint is all salt water needs to reach bare metal. We proved it with a 30-day salt water exposure test: two painted steel plates, both gouged, one left bare and one sealed with Chassis Shield™. Both were submerged in salt water and left outside for 30 days. The bare plate was eaten alive by rust. The sealed plate stayed glossy and rust free. That is exactly what happens under your 4WD after a beach run and a month parked in the driveway.
Why 4WD underbodies rust after washing
There is a variety of different salt compounds in the ocean, and some do not wash away with water. These water-insoluble ionic salt compounds sit in your chassis rails, seams and bolt threads, drawing in moisture and corroding your 4WD from the inside out. That is why almost every beach-driven 4WD carries some surface rust. And it is not just a beach problem: clay and bog mud pack into rails like wet concrete, holding moisture and dissolved salts against the metal for weeks. Chassis Shield™ works three ways: a clear physical barrier between your chassis and corrosive ionic salts and acidic mud, a hydrophobic and sand-phobic surface so salt water beads off and sand will not bond, and an ultra gloss you can actually inspect at every wash.
Original Series vs PRO Series
Original Series is the trip seal, best used before every trip. It gives about 2 weeks of protection from salt and sand blasting on the beach and 6+ months in on-road use, at the lowest cost per coat. It bonds in 24 to 48 hours, applies to painted and lined surfaces, stays a clean transparent film, and removes easily with Salt Exterminator™ whenever you want a fresh start.
PRO Series is the famous Original blend on steroids, made to set and forget. It gives around 3 months of beach protection and up to 12 months of protection overall, dries to a hard ultra-gloss film, is touch dry in 4 hours with a 24-hour bond, takes additional thin coats 12 hours apart, and even handles bare steel. PRO is a hard-wearing film built to stay put: it wears down over its protection window and you simply re-coat.
Both series are 100% transparent and available in 1L, 2L, 3L, 4L, 5L and 20L. The Original 5L includes a 500mL trigger applicator, and every 5L and 20L PRO plus the 20L Original include a trigger applicator too.
The one that changed 4WD care: Chassis Shield™ vs copy cat rust sprays
Every copy cat rust spray since 2021 has borrowed its claims from this bottle, and we bench test them all. Theirs never dry, sitting wet and tacky and grabbing the very sand they claim to repel; whatever the label promises, it is the same wet film underneath. Chassis Shield™ finishes as a clear gloss that is never oily or sticky, so nothing sticks to it and sand and salt rinse off. Your choice runs from a trip seal to a 12-month season seal, in sizes from 1L to 20L from about $6.50 a coat, backed by the original's track record with 70,000+ 4WDers. Customers who have tried the rest put it best: they don't compare durability wise.
Chassis Shield™ vs lanolin, fish oil and bitumen rustproofing
Before Chassis Shield™ you had two choices: coat the underbody in something sticky, or paint it black and hope. Lanolin and fish oil sprays never dry, gluing sand to your chassis in a brown sandpaper film that hides the metal underneath. Bitumen and rubberised rustproofing is a solid black workshop job that typically costs $800 to $1,200, and once it chips, moisture wicks underneath and rust spreads unseen until it is bad. Chassis Shield™ is 100% transparent gloss you spray on in your driveway: you see damage early and treat it, the chassis rejuvenates to showroom condition, and it is made to apply over existing aftermarket lining too, adding sacrificial gloss protection to a rustproofed rig.
Made for 4WD underbodies
Use it on the chassis first and foremost, plus suspension components like leaf springs, shocks and control arms, tow bars, diff housings, bullbars, sliders and wheel arches, and under caravans, camper trailers and box trailers. PRO even handles bare steel. Just a few spots to simply leave uncoated: rubber bushes and joints, the engine, the exhaust and the polished shafts on your shocks (the shock bodies themselves are fine to coat).
How to apply Chassis Shield™
1. Wash and dry: clean the underbody and topside with Salt Exterminator™, pressure rinse, then let it dry completely. You are sealing a clean, dry chassis, never sealing salt in. 2. Spray and leave: coat the chassis, wheels, axles, sliders and arches, and do not rinse it off after application, because the film is the protection. 3. Bond and go: PRO is touch dry in 4 hours and bonds in 24 hours, with extra thin coats 12 hours apart in low humidity; Original bonds in 24 to 48 hours before the trip.
The golden rules: apply to a clean, dry underbody on paint, lining or bare steel (PRO); leave rubber bushes and joints, the engine, the exhaust and shock shafts uncoated; never rinse it off after applying; after the trip, rinse with water, and packed mud gets a Salt Exterminator™ soak. Original applies with any quality trigger or garden sprayer, while PRO goes on with a trigger applicator only. A quick rinse of the trigger with mineral turps after each use keeps it spraying like new.
How far a bottle goes
A coat on a standard 4WD takes roughly 330mL, so a 1L does about 3 coats, a 5L about 15 coats and the 20L drum about 60 coats. That works out as low as about $7 a coat on the Original 5L and around $6.50 a coat from the drum, a fraction of a single workshop rustproofing job.
Cheap insurance for your 4WD's resale value
Used-car valuation guides put the discount for rust at 10 to 20% of the price, 20% or more once it reaches the chassis: on a $60,000 tourer that can be $6,000 to $12,000 gone. Used-4WD buying guides tell buyers to crawl underneath with a torch before paying a cent, and rusty, mud-packed rails kill the deal on the spot. Some even warn that fresh black underbody paint can be a cover-up. A transparent gloss seal means your buyer shines a torch under there and sees a clean, high-gloss chassis with nothing to hide. A few dollars a coat now, or thousands off your price later.
What 4WDers say
Reviewers consistently say the dirt just falls off: red clay rinsed away 150km down the road without a wash, barely any mud stuck after bog runs, and the chassis comes up like new after K'gari, the High Country, bush tracks and saturated farm paddocks alike. PRO users call out the hard, dry finish with zero oily residue and the gloss holding for months, and those who have tried other brands say they don't compare durability wise. The crew from 4WD 24-7, the biggest 4WD channel in the world, run 4WDetail on their own rigs.

Chassis Shield™ FAQ
Original or PRO: which one should I pick? Weekend beach trips a few times a year: Original does the job brilliantly at the lowest cost per coat. Touring, living near the coast or wanting to seal it once and forget it: go PRO.
Is PRO worth the extra over Original? If your rig sees sand or salt air more than a couple of times a year, yes. PRO triples the beach protection window, dries to a harder, glossier film, and one application protects for up to 12 months, so you re-coat once instead of before every trip.
How long does each one actually last? Original: 2 weeks of protection from salt and sand blasting on the beach and 6+ months in on-road use. PRO: 3 months of salt-blasting protection on the beach and up to 12 months of protection with 2 coats applied. Hard driving, water crossings and abrasive terrain shorten any film, so check it after big trips: it is transparent, so you actually can.
When do I apply it, and do I rinse it off? Apply to a clean, dry underbody and let it bond before you head off: minimum 24 hours for PRO and 24 to 48 hours for Original. Never rinse it off after applying: the film is the protection. Rinse the vehicle after the trip and watch the sand, salt and mud let go.
I do mud and bush, not beaches. Still worth it? Yes. Acidic mud packed against your chassis corrodes just like salt does, so the same sand-phobic film that beats the beach keeps the bush off your chassis too.
Is this lanolin or fish oil? Will it stay oily? Definitely not, on both counts. Lanolin, fish oil and the copy cat rust sprays on retail shelves never dry, which means they capture sand and salt and glue it to your chassis. Chassis Shield™ is a clear film that repels instead of grabs, and PRO dries hard on top.
How far does a bottle go? Roughly 330mL per coat on a standard 4WD: about 3 coats from a 1L, 15 from a 5L and 60 from the 20L drum.
How is this better than bitumen rustproofing? Bitumen and rubberised coatings are solid black: once they chip or crack, moisture creeps underneath and rust spreads where you can't see it. Chassis Shield™ is 100% transparent gloss, so you can inspect your actual chassis at every wash, catch anything early, and top up in your driveway for a fraction of the $800 to $1,200 workshops charge.
Will it fix rust that's already there? No coating removes existing rust, and anyone claiming otherwise is having a lend. Treat existing rust first, then seal with Chassis Shield™ to stop the cycle restarting. It will rejuvenate the look of your chassis, in most cases better than new.
What exactly can I spray it on? Chassis, leaf springs, shocks and control arms, tow bars, diff housings, bullbars, sliders, wheel arches, and under caravans, camper trailers and box trailers. PRO even handles bare steel. Leave rubber bushes and joints, the engine, the exhaust and shock shafts uncoated.
Will it help my 4WD's resale value? Massively. Rust can knock 10 to 20% off a used car's price, more once it reaches the chassis, and 4WD buyers always check underneath with a torch. A clean, high-gloss, sealed chassis shows them there is nothing to hide.
How do I get it off later? Original removes easily with Salt Exterminator™ whenever you want a fresh start. PRO is a hard-wearing film built to stay put: it wears down over its protection window and you simply re-coat.
What if it doesn't work for me? Then it's free. Use it as directed, and if you are not happy with the results, we refund your bottle in full under the 30-Day Guarantee.
